Prof. Andrew Blakers is a Professor of Engineering at the Australian National University (ANU) and a highly decorated researcher in renewable energy systems. He has held prestigious fellowships including a Humboldt Fellowship and Australian Research Council QEII and Senior Research Fellowships. His academic output includes around 300 publications and patents, reflecting a long-standing and influential research career.
His work focuses on large-scale renewable energy transition, particularly the design and analysis of 100% renewable energy systems based on wind and solar photovoltaics supported by energy storage. He was jointly awarded the 2018 Eureka Prize for Environmental Research for this work.
A major contribution of his research is the development of a global atlas identifying around one million off-river pumped hydro energy storage sites, which has had significant impact on global energy planning and has supported investment in large-scale storage projects valued at tens of billions of dollars.
His broader research interests include solar energy technologies, photovoltaics (especially silicon solar cells), semiconductors, urban concentrators, pumped hydro energy storage, and energy policy and economics.
