Prof. Sunil Prasad Lohani is a distinguished professor in the Department of Mechanical Engineering at Kathmandu University, Nepal, where he founded and leads the Renewable and Sustainable Energy Laboratory (RSEL). His research spans renewable energy systems, biogas technology, circular bioeconomy solutions, climate-smart buildings, evidence-based policy engagement, household energy transitions, and the water–energy–food (WEF) nexus, with a sustained focus on challenges in developing and least-developed countries.
He has cultivated an extensive global research network, collaborating with leading professors and institutions worldwide. His international partnerships are supported by highly competitive funding bodies, including the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD), the Swedish Research Council, NORPART (Norway), ERASMUS+ (European Union), and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Finland. Through these collaborations, he has contributed to projects with total funding exceeding 3 million USD.
A defining feature of Prof. Lohani’s leadership is his commitment to building research capacity among the next generation of scientists and engineers. His projects have created more than 45 research assistant opportunities and over 35 students from undergraduate to doctoral levels at Kathmandu University, enabling research mobility placements of three to six months at partner institutions in Germany, Sweden, Norway, and Thailand. These efforts have created meaningful pathways for Nepali researchers to engage with the global scientific community. In addition, 10 faculty and staff members have participated in workshop and meetings at partner universities, while 10 international students have spent three months at Kathmandu University as exchange scholars.
Prof. Lohani’s scholarly contributions include more than 60 publications in Q1 and Q2 peer-reviewed journals, reflecting the quality and international relevance of his research. Through his work in research, teaching, and global collaboration, he continues to advance evidence-based solutions to pressing energy and sustainability challenges in Nepal.
